Abstract
One aspect of the subject which had led to much dicussion, argument and confusion is the hinge axis theory.
The purpose of this study is to review bricfly the history and development of the hinge axis and instantaneous contre of rotation theory, and then to consider their application in clinical practics, especially diagnosis and treatment of the T.M.J dysfunction.
The results from this study are as follows.
1. The hinge action is a physiologial function for the growth and development of the T.M. J at the early stage of life but the presence of only one hinge axis is an assumption.
2. Instantaneous contre of rotation would be occurred by the harmony with the masticatory apparatus in the opening and closing movement.
3. A new three dimensional method to evaluate the mandibular movement would be proposed to minimize the errors according to the variabilities of instantaneous centre of rotation.
